Gutters After a New Roof in Cleveland: Replace, Repair or Add Protection

Just put a new roof on your Cleveland home? Here's how to decide whether the gutters stay, get repaired or get replaced, and when to add leaf protection.

Brick two-story house with a dark shingle roof, a round window and a covered front entry

A new roof doesn't automatically mean new gutters, but it's the best moment to take an honest look at them. If your gutters are young and in good shape, they may only need a repair or two. If they're older, sagging or leaking, replacing them now means the whole roof edge starts its next chapter together.

If you've just finished a roof project, or have one on the calendar, you may be wondering what to do about the gutters. Here's how we look at gutters on a home with a new roof.

Why the gutters deserve a look now

A roof and its gutters work as one system. The roof sheds water to the edge, and the gutters carry it to the downspouts. When one half is brand-new and the other half is 20 years old, the older half becomes the weak link.

There's also a practical reason. With a new roof, the roof edge is in the best condition it will be for years. Leaving it to drain into gutters that overflow, leak at the seams or pull away from the fascia undoes some of that.

Keep, repair or replace?

Our rule of thumb is the same one we use on every home: repair makes sense when gutters are under 10 years old and the damage is localized. A single sagging section, one leaking joint or a loose downspout is a repair job.

Replacement makes more sense when you see:

  • Widespread sagging or runs that pull away from the house in more than one spot.
  • Multiple leaks at seams, corners or end caps.
  • Peeling paint behind the gutters, a sign that water has been overflowing.
  • Rot in the fascia behind the gutter line.
  • Gutters that are simply worn out. Seamless aluminum lasts 20+ years, but older sectional gutters with many seams often show their age sooner.

Our list of signs it's time to replace your gutters goes through each of these in more detail.

What we check on a home with a new roof

At the free quote, we look at the gutter system as it works with the roof you have now:

  • Pitch. Gutters should slope about ¼ inch per 10 feet toward the downspouts. Runs that sit level or dip hold water.
  • Hangers. Hangers should be about every 24 inches. Older spike-and-ferrule hardware loosens over time and is a common reason gutters pull away.
  • Seams and corners. We look for drips, stains and old sealant at every joint.
  • Downspout count. A good rule of thumb is roughly one downspout per 30–40 feet of gutter. Long runs with too few downspouts overflow in heavy rain.
  • Fascia and soffit. Peeling paint, stains or soft wood behind the gutter mean water has been getting where it shouldn't.

You get a written, itemized quote, usually the same day or the next business day, that says whether we'd repair or replace and why.

What replacement includes

If replacement is the right call, here's what a Zipco installation looks like:

  • Removal and cleanup. Removal of existing gutters and downspouts plus full debris haul-away is included in every installation quote, with a magnetic sweep for screws and nails.
  • A fascia check. Fascia and soffit should be inspected whenever gutters come off. If we find soft or rotted wood, we'll show you and quote the fix.
  • Seamless aluminum, cut on-site. We bring the gutter machine to your driveway and roll out one continuous gutter for each side of the roof.
  • .032-gauge aluminum as standard. It's thicker than the .027 builder-grade sold by big-box stores and resists ladder dents and ice damage.
  • Hidden hangers every 24 inches, screwed into the rafters.
  • The right size. 5-inch K-style is the residential standard and handles most Ohio homes. 6-inch is for large roofs, steep pitches or heavy tree cover.
  • A water test and walkthrough before we leave.

Most installations take 4–8 hours and are scheduled within 5–7 days of the signed quote.

Matching gutters to the new roof

A new roof often changes the look of the house, and gutters that matched the old shingles may not suit the new ones. We offer 30+ baked-on enamel colors and bring samples to your home so you can see them against the new roof, the trim and the siding. Our post on matching gutter colors covers how homeowners usually choose.

Adding leaf protection

If the roof sits under trees, a new gutter system is a natural time to add Zipco Leaf Shield. It's a perforated aluminum panel that keeps leaves, pine needles and twigs on top while water drains through.

One detail matters on a new roof: Leaf Shield fastens to the gutter itself and is never lifted or slid under your shingles. Most homeowners go from twice-yearly cleanings to once every 2–3 years, and Leaf Shield carries a lifetime no-clog guarantee from the manufacturer, backed by our installation warranty. See our Cleveland leaf protection page.

Timing it before winter

In Northeast Ohio, the window between the end of roof season and the first lake-effect snow can be short. Installing new gutters in fall means they're in place before freeze-thaw cycles and snow load start. Our post on installing gutters in Cleveland before lake-effect season covers the timing in more detail.

We install across the region, from Strongsville and Parma to Westlake, Brecksville and Solon. Details are on our Cleveland gutter installation page.

Frequently Asked Questions

My Parma home just got a new roof. Do I have to replace the gutters too?

Not necessarily. If your gutters are under 10 years old and the problems are localized, a repair is often the right answer. If they're older, sagging in several places or leaking at many joints, replacing them now keeps the roof edge working as one system. We'll give you an honest read at the free quote.

What happens to my old gutters if Zipco replaces them in Westlake?

Removal of the existing gutters and downspouts is included in every installation quote, along with full debris haul-away and a magnetic sweep for screws and nails. We also check the fascia once the old gutters are off.

Will gutter guards on my new Brecksville roof go under the shingles?

Not with Zipco Leaf Shield. It fastens to the gutter itself and is never lifted or slid under your shingles. We color-match the panels to your gutters.
