Gutter Repair After Summer Storms in Columbus: Bent Runs, Loose Downspouts and Branch Damage
How summer storms damage gutters on Columbus homes, from bent runs and loose downspouts to branch impact, and how Zipco repairs or replaces what's damaged.

Summer storms in Central Ohio can leave gutters bent, pulled loose or separated at the joints, and downspouts knocked off the wall, even when nothing looks badly wrong from the driveway. Most of this damage can be repaired, and some of it calls for replacing a run. Either way, it's worth sorting out before fall rain and leaves put the system back to work.
Here's what storm damage to gutters typically looks like on Columbus homes, and how Zipco repairs it.
How storms damage gutters
Central Ohio homes face heavy spring storms and summer hailstorms, and the gutters take a share of the punishment. Damage usually comes from three directions.
Wind
Strong gusts push on gutters and downspouts from below and from the side. A gutter that was already held up by loose hardware can lift away from the fascia, and downspouts can be pulled off the wall or separated at their elbows.
Falling branches
Many Columbus neighborhoods, from Bexley and Upper Arlington to Worthington and Grandview Heights, sit under mature trees. When a limb comes down on the roof edge, it can crush or bend a section of gutter, knock hangers loose, or pull a corner apart.
Heavy rain
A burst of rain fills gutters fast. If a gutter is partly blocked, the weight of the water strains the hangers, and a run that was already weak can start to sag.
What storm damage looks like
Storm damage isn't always obvious. Typical signs include:
- A bent or crushed section where a branch hit.
- A gap between the gutter and the fascia, or a run that tips forward.
- Corners or joints that have separated, so water drips where it didn't before.
- Downspouts hanging loose, disconnected at an elbow, or lying on the ground.
- Water spilling or overshooting from a section that used to drain.
Any of these after a storm is a good reason for a repair visit, which tells you how much actually needs fixing.
Why storm damage gets worse if it waits
Storm damage rarely stays the same size. A joint that separated in a summer storm drips onto the fascia every time it rains, and wood that stays wet softens and rots. A loosened run carries more weight each time it fills with water, and later in the year it has leaves and then ice to hold as well. A downspout knocked off the wall empties right beside the house instead of carrying water away.
Older gutters are usually the most affected. Sectional systems hung on spikes and ferrules already have loose hardware and tired joints, and a storm tends to finish what years of wear started. That's why a repair visit looks at the whole run, not only the spot where the branch landed.
How Zipco repairs storm damage
We diagnose the root cause, whether that's pitch, support or material failure, not just the symptom. A storm often finds the weak points that were already there, so the repair should deal with those too.
Re-securing loose and sagging runs
Sagging or loosened sections are re-pitched and re-secured with new heavy-duty hangers screwed into the rafters. Where we find old spike-and-ferrule hardware, we replace it with hidden hangers, which are stronger and cleaner-looking.
Resealing separated joints
Joints and corners that pulled apart are cleaned and resealed with commercial-grade gutter sealant, then water-tested before we leave. If a sectional system keeps leaking at the joints, converting to seamless is a permanent fix.
Repairing downspouts
Damaged downspouts are re-attached, replaced or re-routed, and chronic clogs are cleared.
Fixing the fascia behind the gutter
When a branch or a pulled-away gutter damages the fascia and the damage is localized, we replace that section of fascia and re-mount the gutter properly. When the damage runs further, our Columbus fascia and soffit service replaces rotted wood with treated lumber and wraps the fascia in aluminum.
When a damaged run needs replacing
A badly bent or crushed gutter often can't be brought back into shape. In that case, the better answer is a new run. Zipco installs seamless gutters formed on-site from .032-gauge aluminum, cut to the exact length of that side of the house and hung on hidden hangers screwed into the rafters every 24 inches. The thicker aluminum resists ladder dents, ice damage and impact from falling branches.
If damage is spread across the whole system, or the gutters were already showing their age, full replacement may make more sense. Repair is usually the right call when the gutters are under 10 years old, the seams are tight and the damage is localized. Sometimes a $200 repair is the right answer. See our Columbus gutter installation page for details on replacement.
What a repair visit looks like
- Diagnostic visit. We come out, identify the root cause and quote the fix. Repair quotes are usually same-day.
- Scheduling. Most repairs are completed within 3–5 days of an approved quote.
- On-site repair. Most jobs are done in a single visit, often in 1–3 hours.
- Water test. Every repair is water-tested before we leave the property.

Frequently Asked Questions
A branch bent my gutter in Upper Arlington. Can it be repaired?
It depends on how badly it's bent. Loose hangers, separated joints and a localized section of damaged fascia can usually be repaired. A crushed or badly bent gutter is usually replaced with a new seamless run, cut on-site to fit that side of the house.
A storm knocked my downspout loose in Worthington. Is that a repair?
Yes. Damaged downspouts are re-attached, replaced or re-routed, and clogs are cleared. Most repairs are done in a single visit, and every repair is water-tested before we leave.
How do I know if storm damage means my Bexley gutters need replacing?
Repair usually makes sense when the gutters are under 10 years old, the seams are tight and the damage is localized. Widespread sagging, multiple leaks, peeling paint behind the gutters or rotting fascia point toward replacement. We give you an honest opinion at the diagnostic visit.
